The @guerrillagirls have been shaking up the artworld status quo since 1985, initially to protest a MoMA retrospective that featured a disproportionately high ratio of male to female artists and no female artists of color.
By the 1990s, this collective of women artists—anonymous and always masked—was getting out its messages of equality and antidiscrimination through billboards, magazine ads, protests, letter-writing campaigns, speaking tours at colleges and museums, and in art shows.
“Frida Kahlo” of the Guerrilla Girls was spotted around Union Market District before heading over to @femmeartfair at @dc.thesquare. Created by @usanusan_ and @ourdaughtersfutures, FEMME ART FAIR is happening August 27 – 30.
