While many Westerners knew little of Russia’s punk scene until Pussy Riot’s arrival on the global stage in 2012, as Herbert reports in this dynamic oral history, punk first gained a foothold in the Soviet Union in 1978. Arriving with black market vinyl and fanzines, the music soon fostered a youth movement that managed to stay one step ahead of the secret police. Profiling the key figures involved, Herbert, a research fellow at Brandeis, follows the music from early bands like Avtomaticheskie Udovletvoriteli and Naïve to later ones such as Distress, Ricochet, and the anti-fascist Proverochnaia Lineika and chronicles punk’s spread from Moscow and St. Petersburg to provincial cities.
