Join the Consulate General of Peru in Washington DC for an art exhibition opening event at La Cosecha.
This photo exhibition showcases 27 stunning images of Peru’s rich flora and fauna, spanning the coast, Andean, and Amazonian regions. Captured by talented Peruvian and international photographers, these photos celebrate the natural beauty and biodiversity within Peru’s protected areas. These areas, administered by SERNANP (National Service of Protected Natural Areas), are vital in preserving the country’s biological diversity, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural heritage while promoting sustainable use of resources to benefit local communities. As one of the world’s ten most megadiverse countries, Peru safeguards 77 protected areas, covering over 17% of the national territory.
The exhibition also features four traditional costumes from each natural region of Peru, representing the cultural richness tied to these landscapes:
- Tondero (coastal): Originating from northern Peru, Tondero combines Andean, African, and Spanish influences. A flirtatious dance, it highlights graceful movements with traditional attire, including straw hats for men and embroidered skirts or tunics for women.
- Festejo (coastal): A lively Afro-Peruvian dance using the cajón, quijada, and guitar, celebrating the vibrant traditions of Lima, Ica, and coastal towns. Women wear red and white skirts, while men wear broad-sleeved shirts and sashes.
- Valicha (Andean): This spirited dance from Cusco features alpaca or vicuña hats, embroidered skirts, and geometric designs, reflecting Andean culture with its colorful attire and intricate details.
- Amazonian Dance: From the Peruvian Amazon, this dance showcases vibrant costumes made with seeds and traditional “cushmas” (tunics), accompanied by spears and arrows to honor indigenous heritage.
Join us to explore the harmonious blend of nature, culture, and tradition that defines Peru’s national reserves.
The opening reception will be at 12 pm on Saturday, November 9, at Balcón-La Cosecha. Following this reception, there will be showcased traditional Peruvian music and dances.
This event is free and open to the public.
