Successful entrepreneurs get in the ring to fight for their businesses and communities every day. When they get knocked down, they get back up. Like a boxing match, fighting, winning, losing, getting back up, and building a team are all the things that you will experience as an entrepreneur.

“Entrepreneurship is a Boxing Match,” a poem by Shelly Omilâdè Bell, founder & CEO of Black Girl Ventures Foundation (BGV), is the inspiration for this large-scale mural at Union Market District painted by artist and activist BMike.

The mural highlights women entrepreneurs from Washington’s DMV who, against all odds, have created thriving businesses: Brittany Young, founder of B360 Baltimore; Dawn Meyers, founder of The Most Curls; Anika Hobbs, founder of Nubian Hueman; Naza Shelley, founder of Carpe DMdating; and Shelly Omilâdè Bell.

In continuation of BGV’s new partnership with Nike, the goal of this project is to elevate Black and Brown woman-identifying founders through the arts on a local level, and to shine a light on the work of some of the most dynamic change agents in our communities.

Black and Brown women rarely get the recognition and acknowledgment that they deserve and, in part through this project, BGV is developing public art that will help change this reality one community at a time. In each location, BGV is collaborating with artists to create engaging multimedia content that will share some of the creative development process and highlight the great things that are happening in BGV’s chapter communities. This partnership with Nike helps ensure that each location is amplified on a national level and beyond.
